Student or corporate syndrome, otherwise known by chiropractors and physical therapists as Upper Cross Syndrome, is a postural syndrome caused by weakened upper back, neck and shoulder muscles and alternating patterns of tightened upper back, neck and shoulder muscles.
Symptoms of Upper Cross Syndrome:
- Appears slowly
- Tenderness, soreness or pain in the upper back muscles and neck muscles
- Pain in the base of the skull
- Shoulder hunching
- Restricted range of motion
- Possible shoulder pain
- Pain is better with heat
Predisposing Factors:
- Excessive sitting or other posture that allows adaptive shortening of muscles
- Prolonged time leaning over desk or keyboard
- Sports such as swimming and cycling
- Weight lifters with focus unequally on large muscle groups
- Poor ergonomics
- Heavy backpacks
Diagnosis of Upper Cross Syndrome
- Typically diagnosed based on medical history and physical exam only
- In rare cases, x-ray or other imaging is done to rule out other possible conditions
Treatment Options:
- Myofascial therapy and stretching to tight muscles
- Strengthening of weak muscles
- Manipulation of restricted joints
- Identification and education of perpetuating factors (postural and sedentary lifestyle)
- Medication to manage pain and inflammation
- Trigger point injections to break cycle of spasm in more extreme cases
